Anyone who has been through any sort of physical therapy can tell you it can be difficult and not the most fun.
Imagine if you were a child having to relearn how to walk and balance?
Tucker is a chief canine officer at Kapiolani. His good buddy is Sebastian Zavala, who has spent the past two months in rehabilitation.
"Tucker is motivation. The kids want to go across the balance beam. They want to stand on the ball. want to throw him the ball because it’s Tucker. He is motivating to them," said Physical therapist, Kelly Meyer.
Sebastian, or Bash as he likes to be called, was swimming with friends and family on the Big Island back in August when his life dramatically changed.
"And we were trying to ask him, baby what’s wrong? What leg did yo hurt, and a few seconds after that he became unresponsive. And so we rushed him to the hospital, and we got to the first hospital and they did a C-T scan which showed he had some bleeding on his brain," said Sebastian’s mother, Jennifer Marin.
Bash had a stroke. And he’s been working hard ever since to get back to full strength. And that’s where Tucker, a rehabilitation specialist in his own right comes in. "He’s so motivating for kids. It’s something really fun to do, to pet a dog instead of just having to do things with your hands that isn’t quite so fun when you’re learning to rehab again," said Dr. Wendi, Tucker’s handler.
