Elderly Puna woman hospitalized after violent home invasion

What a scary night for an elderly Big Island woman.

Police say she was at home when a man broke into her house and attacked her.

The woman survived the attack and is recovering thanks to her daughter.

The victim lives alone in a home in the Paradise Park subdivision of Puna and was on the phone with her daughter when she was attacked.

Around 11 o’clock Friday night, 69 year-old Mary Davy was sleeping when she heard strange noises outside her home.

Afraid, she called her daughter on Maui.

"They jiggled the door handle or something and so my sister told her put something in front of the door and call 911," said the victim’s daughter, Valerie Matsuda.

Matsuda says the suspect kicked the door open and started attacking her mother with gardening shears.

She says her younger sister, Suzanne, remained on the phone in horror, listening to her mother fight for her life.

"Basically she could just hear my mom screaming you know at the guy and you know just could hear the guy stabbing my mom," Matsuda says."My mom fought him off as much as she could and was able to get the shears out of his hands…I’m totally not surprised at all, she’s very feisty."

During the ordeal Suzanne called the police from another phone.

"Finally he got her on the ground had his knee on the back of her head and she was twisting her neck her face was already cut and lacerated and he was stabbing her and she knew he was going to break her neck and kill her," Matsuda says.

That’s when the victim heard the police running up the stairs, and the suspect fled with her purse.

"He beat her she’s black and blue and it was just terrible for no reason she’s going to be 70 this year in December and she doesn’t even kill bugs," Matusda says.

Matsuda says her mother suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Hilo Hospital in critical condition.

Police located and arrested an 18 year-old man who was hiding in a nearby home where they say he lives.

He was arrested for burglary in the first degree and attempted murder in the second degree.

"Our records have shown although they don’t know each other personally. there have been a prior incident involving both individuals," said Lt. Greg Esteban of the Hawaii County Police Department.

The victim’s daughter says the suspect tried to steal her mother’s car in August, police found his finger prints on the vehicle.

"She’s doing well but got some horrible scars that she’s going to have to live with for the rest of her life on her face, her lips and her mouth," Matsuda says.

Police say the suspect is being held at the East Hawaii Detention Facility while they investigate.

He has not yet been charged with either crimes.
