An elderly Big Island woman is recovering in the hospital after surviving a terrifying ordeal in her own home overnight.
Police say an 18-year old man forced his way into her home in the Paradise Park subdivision in Puna and attacked her.
This happened around midnight on Saturday.
They entered the house when she was asleep. She saw a flashlight in the kitchen, woke up, yelled for them to get out. Her big dog got up stumbled in the kitchen the guy backed away, she thought he left.
Suzanne MacAdam says that’s when her mom Mary Davy called her, and told her what had just happened.
Mary told Suzanne she turned on all the lights, and put a chair in front of the door.
"We were talking like maybe he left then I heard a big crashing sound, and then I heard her scream, ‘Get out, get out, get out’," Suzanne says.
Suzanne says the phone line went dead and her mom managed to call 911.
Suzanne also called 911 and gave police directions to her mom’s house in the Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.
Suzanne finally got back in touch with her mom and heard her screaming.
"It’s horrifying, it’s horrifying I’ve never felt so horrified in my whole life. She’s screaming bloody murder," she says. "And he had her neck or head in his hands, and she felt like he was going to break her neck, and the cop cars came in and he stopped and he split."
Suzanne says the suspect took her mom’s purse.
And that her mom, who’s 69 years old, has stab wounds all over.
"She’s got scratches all over her hands, most of her injuries are all on top," Suzanne says.
In the meantime, police combed the neighborhood looking for the suspect.
After about an hour and a half, officers found the 18-year old suspect hiding in a home nearby, and arrested him for burglary and attempted murder.
Police believe the suspect and victim are neighbors.
"Her story is that he came in with gardening shears from downstairs rummaged and found gardening shears, and he came in and she’s like take my wallet, take my money it’s right there take and and leave, and he came after her, and she tried to push him out the door and he proceeded in," Suzanne says. "It’s aggravated random assault and my mom, I was talking to her today, and she kept saying over and over he was killing me, he wanted to kill me."
Police are still looking into a motive.
"Our records have shown although they don’t know each other personally there have been a prior incident involving both individuals," said Hawaii County police officer Lt. Greg Esteban.
Police believe the suspect stole Mary’s car over the summer.
Mary lives alone, but has six children and 35 grand and great grandchildren.
her family is just thankful she survived the horrifying ordeal.
The suspect remains in custody at the Hilo Police Station.
He has not been charged yet.
