Outdoor classroom offers Wahiawa students hands-on lessons

A new outdoor classroom is giving Wahiawa students hands-on lessons.

A dedication ceremony was held Tuesday at Hale Kula Elementary School, which is located inside Schofield Barracks.

It features a rainwater catchment system equipped with a 9,000 gallon tank. Water collected will help irrigate the school’s many gardens, that are already benefiting the students.

"I actually got some cherry tomatoes. I haven’t ate them yet though I can’t wait to eat them," said fifth-grader Alan Deogracias.

"They’re very open minded they want to do the right thing, they want to do what’s pono, and they want to take responsibility and this is a great way to let them do it," said Col. Douglas Mulbury, U.S. Army Garrison commander.

The outdoor classroom will also be used for activities and lessons on sustainability.
