A mother’s unexpected battle with breast cancer has inspired a Windward Oahu restaurant to raise money for the cause.
Kainani Inouye is a healthy 35 year-old mother of two young children who was diagnosed with breast cancer just 3 months ago. "It really came out of the blue, unexpected. I…no history, I did a lot of testing, I never ever thought it would happen to me."
During a self exam she noticed something was different with her left breast. "Its hard to explain like if you had a bite or something just under your skin," Inouye said. She and her husband Russ found out there were two lumps that turned out to be malignant tumors. "Surprised because she exercises eats well, she’s young…its scary. Definitely," said Russ.
Kainani opted to take the most aggressive approach to avoid radiation. She had a mastectomy and is now on hormone therapy.
Motivated to help broaden awareness about breast cancer Russ, who is part owner of the He’eia Pier General Store & Deli, started an October Pink Plate Lunch campaign. Customers pay an extra $2 for a pink plate for breakfast or lunch and the money goes to the American Cancer Society in Honolulu. All 12 restaurant employees have also volunteered to donate all of their tips and they are extending the fundraiser until November 6th.
He’eia Pier General Store & Deli is located at 46-499 Kamehameha Hwy.
