Off the news: State files suit over SNAP data gathering

The U.S. government’s deportation tactics are sowing fear and mistrust among many immigrant communities and civil rights advocates. It’s no wonder, then, that Hawaii is among some 20 states that filed a federal lawsuit Monday challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s demand to turn over personal information of millions of people receiving federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food aid.
