Editorial: Cooperation is key to cleaner seas

It was not too long ago when fledgling initiatives first sought to teach isle schoolchildren about the environmental dangers posed by consumer plastics. Among cautionary tales about bottle caps and food wrappers was the uniquely Pacific-state warning on the disposal of plastic soda rings, which could end up at sea, caught around a sea turtle’s neck or limb. It appears those early concerns were valid, as beaches around the Pacific Rim now see tons of plastics, glass shards, fishing nets, paper goods and other waste wash ashore. It is rightly called a marine debris crisis.
