Off the news: Stay alert amid unusually dry conditions

The danger cannot be overstated. Parts of Hawaii island are experiencing acutely arid conditions, with rainfall — or more accurately a lack thereof — in chronic dry regions leading to extreme drought conditions, according to National Weather Service data. Parched earth and high winds combined to trigger several red flag warnings over the past month, the same situation in which Maui found itself prior to 2023’s deadly wildfires.
