Off the news: DHHL project leases return to pare waitlist

The state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is reviving its use of “project leases” and plans to lock in homestead awards for more than 6,000 eligible Hawaiians on the agency’s waitlist, thus allowing the housing interest to pass to leaseholders’ descendants. That would help to dramatically rev up the pace of granting leases from DHHL’s past, deplorable average of fewer than 100 per year since the program began in 1921.
