Column: Military must return land in good stead

After the people of Hawaii demanded public input regarding the future of our islands’ military lands, Gov. Josh Green announced that he will slow down the timeline on negotiations for leases set to expire in 2029. Yet he recently came under fire from members of his own advisory committee, convened to guide the process, for communicating with the U.S. secretary of the Army without their prior consultation. The governor must understand the high stakes of these negotiations, particularly the importance of a full accounting of the military’s impacts and a negotiation framework in which the restoration and the return of military lands are on the table.
