In today’s immediate, free-flowing information world, it’s counterintuitive that less — not more — direct information is reaching the public from the Honolulu Police Department and other city agencies called to emergencies. Back in the day, news media, and others with a “police scanner,” could freely hear the incoming calls in real time, which supported public safety in staying on top of developing situations. But that ceased in 2022, when the city’s analog system converted to a digital, encrypted one.
