Column: Ka malu ‘ulu o Lele

Synopsis: The old name for Lahaina is Lele, and it was once the royal Hawaiian capital and contained numerous breadfruit and other trees. The town was transformed by the sugar industry, but the Aug. 8, 2023, fire destroyed everything and killed 102 people. Part of the county rebuilding plan includes restoring the old Hawaiian royal complex and trees.
