Off the news: Pining for an old-time State of the Union

The State of the Union address (today’s speech is being carried live on many news networks starting at 4 p.m. Hawaii time) was not always the performative and, in recent years, partisan event it has become. In fact, it’s only been since Woodrow Wilson was president in 1913 that it’s been regularly delivered as a speech at all.
