One of my favorite gigs as a consultant educator is observing student teachers as adjunct faculty for Brigham Young University- Hawaii. The “teacher candidates” assigned to me are on the last rung of the ladder to teacher certification, as they complete a final semester of a rigorous teacher preparation program by teaching in a public-school classroom alongside an experienced host teacher. I think of this program as a “capture and release” action — we need to capture their passion and commitment to becoming educators and then release them into the real world wild of public-school teaching.
