The Honolulu Salary Commission gave huge pay raises to the mayor and City Council members just a few years ago (“Honolulu salary panel OKs 4.7% pay raises for top city officials,” Star-Advertiser, April 23). You might think that with the financial difficulties that this state is expected to face in the upcoming year, and the cost from the recent storms, that new pay raises might be postponed. There is even consideration of canceling the state tax cuts promised just last year. And 4.7% is about double the inflation rate.
