Vladimir Devens’ confirmation as chief justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court came with a blip, rightly so. The state Senate’s 20-5 vote reflected uneasiness over Devens’ failure to initially disclose that he had been one of three directors of Be Change Now, which is funded by Pacific Resource Partnership, the Hawaii Carpenters Union’s influential political arm.
