Off the news: Big Isle mulls limited property tax boost

On Hawaii island, where the county is facing an estimated $15 million budget gap for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, the Hawaii County Council is considering higher property taxes on residential properties owned by nonresidents, and on unoccupied second homes: from a current $13,600 to $15,000 per $1 million in taxable value on homes worth more than $2 million, and from $11,100 to $12,100 per $1 million in taxable value on homes valued below $2 million.
