The U.S. Army hopes to renew its lease at Pohakuloa Training Area, a roughly 23,000-acre parcel it has used for live-fire training exercises. However, the Army already has access to 132,000 acres of federal land adjacent to Pohakuloa. As noted in the Star-Advertiser, live-fire exercises leave behind large amounts of unexploded ordnance (“On deadly ground,” May 17). The marginally successful efforts to remove unexploded munitions from small portions of Kahoolawe don’t instill confidence in the military’s ability to clean up after they are done using an area.
Letter: Relocate Army exercises away from Pohakuloa
