I usually enjoy reading David Shapiro’s columns in the Sunday paper. His wit is usually entertaining. Not this time. I was shocked at how he made light of a visitor from Washington throwing a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal on Maui (“He who messes with a seal is messing with the lot of us,” Star-Advertiser, VolcanicAsh, May 31). It’s not a joke, it’s a serious example of the lack of common sense. You don’t throw rocks at endangered animals. It was in poor judgement that Mr. Shapiro found humor in this, I’m sure I can speak for many here, it was not funny and in poor taste.
Letter: Rock-throwing at monk seal no laughing matter
