Letter: Halt new jail, invest in rehab alternatives

Mahalo to the authors for questioning the wisdom of proceeding with a proposed billion-dollar replacement jail for the Oahu Community Correctional Center (“Consider merits of jail renovation,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, May 10). While taxpayers across every island will ultimately foot the bill for this unnecessary jail, the state has failed to conduct public meetings to solicit community input throughout Hawaii.
