Coconut rhinoceros beetles (CRBs) have wreaked havoc on Oahu’s coconut palms, including those in Honolulu parks and a “royal grove” of trees planted by some of the earliest Polynesian settlers — but haven’t been established on Maui. Fears that they may establish a Maui foothold spiked this month, though, when five dead adult beetles were found in detection traps set by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB).
