The U.S. Supreme Court effectively dismantled a central pillar of the Trump administration’s immigration platform last week when it decided, rightly, that the 14th Amendment cannot be overridden by simple decree. In a 6-3 ruling, the court sided against Donald Trump’s Jan. 20, 2025, executive order that would wrench citizenship protections away from babies born to parents living in the U.S., and in doing so, reaffirmed America’s uniquely social contract.
