Letter: Affordable rentals bill needs renovation

I support the initial proposed goal of Bill 7. Hawaii definitely needs more affordable housing. But from a local’s perspective, the process is much harder than it originally intended. My family tried to embrace the affordable housing initiative in 2020, but a majority of community owners has to deal with high interest rates, construction costs, insurance issues, road-widening requirements, permitting delays and lenders problems. These hurdles can stop a project before it starts.
