Editorial: Carefully consider access road plans

In 2024, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that the state Department of Transportation was in the wrong when it wrenched control of Mauna Kea Access Road from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands in 2018, a move conducted unilaterally without proper consultation with beneficiaries or compensation to DHHL. Two years later and the road leading up to Mauna Kea’s summit is again under DHHL’s domain — but new plans for the four-mile stretch could add unwanted complexity to an already volatile situation, since Native Hawaiian advocates have for decades decried telescopes perched atop a mountain many consider sacred.
