Letter: Weak argument for opening fishing zone

On June 11, a presidential proclamation declared the North Pacific Ocean open to U.S. commercial fishing in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone seaward of 50 nautical miles from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). The Hawaii Longline Association (HLA) argues that allowing fishing in the NWHI is necessary to compete against foreign fleets. In fact, the U.S. longline fleet catches its Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission tuna quota outside of U.S. waters every year.
