On Saturday, Maui County will mark the third anniversary of the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfire disaster that destroyed Lahaina — with a now-annual gathering, Kuhinia Maui, to commemorate those whose lives were taken. There will be grieving, and connection. And there will be talk of a hopeful future, as survivors and their neighbors throughout the state pursue a vision that has taken shape over the past three difficult years. But there will be no talk of getting “back to normal.” Much progress has been made, but in the wake of the disaster, each day is shadowed by the lost lives, trauma and physical destruction the fire imposed.
