Our new or reelected local political candidates will benefit from heeding Sam Kakazu’s letter, “Closed food systems are promising investments,” to meet Hawaii’s land, food and water challenges (Star-Advertiser, Aug. 10). With unprecedented climate warming and higher risks for drought and fires, promoting vertical farming, urban gardens and the rezoning of underutilized dormant lands fed by repurposed material mulch and compost makes for a good campaign platform.
