Editorial: New faces and a chance for change

Of the Hawaii Legislature’s 76 seats, fewer than half have a general election contest, and that’s a shame. Many seats this year were uncontested, with more settled in August’s primary. But an anticipated ho-hum primary did provide sparks of drama when not one, but two legislative races ended in ties, spurring luck-of-the-draw lots to determine who would move on to the general. For Senate District 20, the tie-breaker had Republican Bob McDermott beating incumbent Kurt Fevella, so two nonincumbents now vie for this office (see below). In House District 43, incumbent Kanani Souza will rematch against fellow Republican Sheila Medeiros, a rare same-party general contest after Souza successfully challenged the primary race results (coming Wednesday).
