Visitors to national parks in Hawaii and American Samoa have donated $415,000 at the checkout counters in Hawai‘i Pacific Parks Association visitor center stores, the organization announced Oct. 15. This is despite the challenges posed by a partial federal government shutdown, periodic national park closures due to hurricanes and other damaging weather events, volcanic eruptions and steady increases in the cost of living and vacationing.
