Sky lanterns illegal in Hawaii

Governor Abercrombie signed into law a ban on aerial luminaries or sky lanterns.

The paper lanterns are heated by a small candle which causes them to float into the air for several hundred feet before the heat dies out.

The law bans the ignition, possession, sale and use of sky lanterns.

It’s something the Honolulu Fire Department applauds.

“And what we’ve seen is this has been a very problematic device for us, not only in the wild land, but also in the urban environment because if it lands on a home, if it gets stuck in utility wires they can create a lot of problems for us,” said HFD Chief Kenneth Silva.

The statewide ban takes effect immediately.
