A controversial bill aimed at banning commercial activity at two Windward Oahu beaches will be voted on by the City Council Wednesday.
One of the business owners affected says this will lead to a loss in jobs and result in a blow to the local economy.
Since July 1st, a new law has banned kayak rentals and tours at this Windward Oahu beach over the weekend.
But the Honolulu City Council will consider at a complete ban on all commercial activity from both Kailua Beach Park and Kalama Beach Park.
"It doesn’t bother me that they are here but it does bother some people you know I am sure,” said Luke Stillwell, beachgoer.
"I enjoy kayaking myself but I have noticed recently that there are just too many kayakers out there, it feels just a little too crowded,” said Sande Robert, beachgoer.
But local businesses who utilize the public space to provide kayaking activities say this particular area is designated for them to use.
"The area where you see these kayaks is the legal loading and unloading zone for kayaks and canoes and that was established for the Kailua Beach master plan,” Said Bob Twogood of Twogood Kayaks Hawaii.
If Twogood Kayaks was banned from doing business here, "It’s going to put us out of business,” says Twogood.
With the possibility dozens workers could be out of a job, Twogood says this could impact the local economy.
"I think it will be hard and the people who depend on that money the local people that provide a service and that enriches this part of the island,” said Robert.
"I don’t mind compromising and I like to work for 31 years we have been trying to work in harmony with this community,” said Twogood.
