Ariyoshi remembered as visionary leader through turbulent times

Former Gov. George Ryoichi Ariyoshi — Hawaii’s longest-­serving governor and America’s first governor of Japanese ancestry — was remembered Friday night at the state Capitol as a visionary leader who helped steer Hawaii from a plantation-­based U.S. Territory into a modern era of diversified agriculture, tourism and aerospace technology and through the tumultuous 1970s cultural Hawaiian renaissance.
