On the ninth island of Las Vegas, Nevada, perhaps the end of the legendary career of Hilo-native BJ Penn took place Saturday night.
One of only two men in UFC history to hold titles in multiple weight classes suffered his third loss in his last six fights falling by unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 137 to Nick Diaz.
Former Strikeforce champion had a 6-inch reach advantage over the future hall of famer and used it, out-boxing Penn in the final two rounds after BJ looked to have controlled the opening-frame.
Following the fight, to the surprise of many, the prodigy revealed that it is the end of an era.
"This probably the last time you will ever see me in here," Penn said after the fight. "I’ve got a daughter at home, another on the way. I don’t want to go home looking like this."
Shocking words out of the greatest mixed martial artist to ever come out of the 50th state.
If this is it, 32-year-old finishes his career 16-8-2.
