Column: ʻO Helumoa ma ke one o Kakuhihewa

Synopsis: September is Hawaiian history month. In the past, Waikïkï was a vast marshy area, fed from the waters of the Makiki, Mänoa and Pälolo valleys. Helumoa was a Waikïkï coconut grove started by Kakuhihewa. Many royals lived at the grove. Today, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel stands there, and a sign on the east side of the building offers some information about the site’s past.
