As covered by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO) makes the claim that the equitable distribution of income in Hawaii makes Hawaii one of the most equal states in the country. While this framing of Hawaii’s economic system is a hopeful one, especially at a time when income inequality globally seems out of control, we believe that there is more to the story, and that this framing masks the complex challenges facing Hawaii’s workforce.
