Column: City needs permanent office to process growing data needs

When a Honolulu resident applies for a building permit, calls 311, rides TheBus, or accesses social services, something else happens too: the City and County of Honolulu creates and collects information, or data. Multiply these daily interactions by more than 900,000 residents and Honolulu’s 21 departments and six offices, and it becomes clear how much information the city holds about individuals, businesses, and day-to-day transactions. Depending on whether the city has the resources, tools and policies to manage it well, this mountain of data can become a valuable asset or a serious liability.
