Column: He pōpilikia nā malihini pākela ʻai lāʻau Hawaiʻi

Synopsis: Axis deer were gifted to Kamehameha V in 1868. They reproduce rapidly and their numbers grew to a peak of approximately 60,000 on Maui in 2022. There is an ongoing program to pay hunters $50 for each deer they kill. So far this program has successfully reduced the deer population on Maui to approximately 26,330. A good start but more needs to be done.
