In 1825, King Kamehameha III issued a decree that should still resonate in every hallway of our public schools: “My kingdom shall be a kingdom of learning.” It was a sacred vow. But today, as a father and a Maui teacher of 20 years, I see that promise has never materialized by a government that treats our children’s future as an optional expense.
