Column: Licensure compact not the answer to isles’ nurse shortage

Hawaii’s health care system is under enormous strain, with hospitals and clinics struggling to fill critical nursing positions. In response, some lawmakers are pushing the state to join the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), which would allow nurses licensed in other compact states to practice in Hawaii without going through the local licensing process. On the surface, this seems like a quick fix to improve staffing. But the data tells a different story.
