Column: Lift restrictions on wastewater financing

Replacing nearly 88,000 cesspools across Hawaii won’t happen overnight — and it won’t happen cheaply. As the state works toward its 2050 deadline to eliminate cesspools, communities will need to make significant investments in wastewater infrastructure while keeping service affordable for the people who depend on it. But this effort is about more than replacing aging infrastructure. It’s about protecting Hawaii’s groundwater, coastal waters and the natural resources that make our islands so special.
