Column: Military youth, students need our aloha

In March, my colleague, Niki Fisiiahi-Thomayer, and I had the privilege of presenting at the 9th Annual Transition Centers Best Practices Conference. I confess I had no idea what the Transitions Centers were until we got there! I learned that the Transition Centers program was started in 2017 at public schools with high populations of military-dependent students and schools located on military bases. I learned that 30% of our public-school students are military dependents. I learned that these School Transition Centers were created to provide a safe and stable foundation for newly arrived military-dependent students.
