Column: On HMSA-HPH plan, assess patients, docs, oversight

Hawaii’s health care system is under strain. Patients face long waits, rising costs and uneven access across islands. Hawaii’s isolated geography, limited competition and already‑strained workforce make any major structural change more consequential than in larger markets. In this environment, HMSA and Hawai‘i Pacific Health (HPH) have proposed forming One Health Hawai‘i, a nonprofit parent organization that would oversee both HMSA — the state’s largest insurer — and HPH, a major nonprofit hospital network that includes Straub Benioff Medical Center, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center and Wilcox Medical Center. The organizations say the affiliation will improve coordination, reduce administrative burdens, expand value‑based care, maintain an open network, and lower costs.
