Column: Voting rights are under attack again

On Jan. 11, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Republican-sponsored SAVE America Act, a more draconian version of the SAVE Act, it passed in 2025. Both acts require anyone registering to vote to prove U.S. citizenship using an original (or state-certified) birth certificate or a current U.S. passport.
