In the name of national security, active-duty servicemembers in Hawaii train for warfare and to survive incoming fire, quite literally — but last Wednesday, they dodged a bullet, figuratively. Paychecks, which had been threatened by no-shows due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, did materialize at the 11th hour. The reprieve could be only temporary, however, with another dire situation coming to a head in the next pay period, at the end of next week.
