Editorial: Build quickly off task force advice

The Legislature’s Simplifying Permitting for Enhanced Economic Development (SPEED) task force, authorized by Act 133 on May 29, 2025, was charged with digging into “challenges” that drag out permitting across the state. Don’t yawn: This concerted effort to look into redundancies, missed opportunities, overcomplicated reporting and review requirements, and outdated ways of doing things, including areas where the state and counties overlap, has the potential to be one of the most important and productive legislative actions in Hawaii’s recent history.
