Editorial: Defense, union jobs key to growth

It may not feel that way to Hawaii’s professionals, most of whom earn salaries significantly below benchmarks in comparably expensive mainland regions, but during the first four months of 2025, Hawaii’s labor market was one of the best in the nation, the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) reports. Hawaii had the nation’s fifth-lowest unemployment rate when seasonally adjusted, and second-lowest based on unadjusted numbers. Hawaii payroll job growth ranked fourth-highest in the nation.
