Native Hawaiian advocacy, however anyone views it, is moving to new territory. Physically, the Native Hawaiian Convention recently concluded in Tulalip, Wash., after drawing together many of its constituency who reside on the mainland. More Native Hawaiians live outside than within the islands, so this outreach makes perfect sense.
