Decades after moving from the fringes of accepted medicine and squarely into standard practice, psychiatry remains a misunderstood science, with mental health stigma at times serving as a foundation for treatment overregulation. Caution on matters of the mind is not unwarranted — indeed, America’s last lobotomy was performed in 1967 — but governmental meddling in science, particularly on sensitive medical issues, can stifle progress and harm patients. A fine balance must be struck between patient needs, safety and innovation — one informed by practitioners, experts and well-vetted research.
