It seems wrong to consider siting landfill operations at a spot very near the city’s current operation, Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill — so close that the property’s owners are calling the city plan an “expansion.” The Waimanalo Gulch landfill has thoroughly worn out its welcome in the years since it opened in 1989, having subjected its West Oahu neighbors to noxious smells, polluted dust, endless drive-throughs by convoys of garbage trucks — even a storm surge-induced failure in 2011 that sent toxic sediment, medical waste and trash sliding into the beach below.
