The damage and inconveniences wrought by Tropical Storm Lala underscored the ferocity of nature — and the fragility of our mortal structures. It also reminded just how electricity-reliant we have become, not just for major appliances such as refrigerators and washers, but also for First World staples like cellphones and streaming devices. Given our energy vulnerability, Hawaii must reset and accelerate this state’s pursuit of reliable, renewable power — toward more energy independence, rather than overreliance on a traditional omni-grid utility.
